20 Things to do during your stay in Flåm

 

1. Just relax and soak in the views using your boat for trips on the fjord

2. Take a return trip on the Flåm Railway

Alternatively you could walk the valley or part of the valley on the way down.

3. Take a return trip on the Nærøyfjord

Norway’s narrowest and most spectacular fjord.

4. Take the snow road to the ‘Stegastein’ viewpoint

5. Visit the salmon center and the Borgund stave church

If you have a car, drive over the mountains (Mid May) to Lærdal.

6. Take a day trip to Balestrand by express boat

7. Take a round trip

By car take a round trip from Flåm via Gudvangen, Vinje, Vik, Vangsnes, Hella, Leikanger, Sogndal, Lærdal and returning to Flåm.

8. Visit Nigardsbreen (nine farms glacier)

Take glacier walk.

9. Visit the Norwegian Glacier museum in Fjærland

Day trip - A great place to learn about glaciers in a very attractive area, interesting for children and adults. Visit the small town of Fjærland and the Bøyabreen (glacier)

10. Day trip to the Sognefjell

Need a full day. Drive to the Turtagro Hotel (or further) on the Sognefjell in the Jostedal National Park for beautiful views. Take the Rv 55 from Sogndal via Gaupne & Luster and come back via Årdal (Tindevegen).

12. Visit Undredal

Visit Undredal, where you can taste the locally produced goat cheese and visit Norway’s smallest church from 1147.

Visit Bakka – with spectacular views of the Nærøyfjord.

13. Hike from Bakka to Rimstigen

Very steep but amazing views.

14. Cycle the Rallarvegen (Navvies’ road)

- from Finse 1222 meters above sea level (or Hallingskeid 1110 masl) to Flåm. Possible from mid July.

15. Take the Flåm Zipline down from Vatnahalsen (on the Rallarvegen) down to Kårdalen

The Flåm Zipline is the longest zipline in Scandinavia with a span of 1,381m.

16. Take your boat for a trip to Aurland

(don’t forget to take the petrol can!) and visit the Aurland (Vangen) church from 1202 and visit the Aurland shoe factory. Maybe have a picnic lunch on the way at the Fronnes beach.

17. Visit the Viking Village in Gudvangen

18. Wander around Flåm  

1. Walk out along the fjord to Otternes and visit the small cluster of farm buildings from the 1600s. 

2. Visit Flåm church from 1670. 

3. Walk up the side of the Brekke waterfall with great views of the Fretheim Farm and Aurlandsfjord.

4. Try local attractions of kayaking or take a fjord safari on a RIB boat.

5. Relax on the beach in Flåm.

6. Hire a bike – located by the railway station.

19. Take a shopping and sightseeing trip to Voss or Sogndal

Bergen is also possible for a day trip.

20. Take a day tour to Hardanger

Drive down the west side of the Sørfjorden to Odda and return on the eastern side.

N.B. Depending on what time of year you are visiting Flåm, it is always a good idea to check times of trains, buses and opening times with the tourist information located at the Flåm Railway station. These are just a few suggestions of trips and tours to take when staying in Flåm. There are a number of walks in the area, have a chat with the tourist information. The best times to visit them are in the early morning or evening as they are usually very busy during the day.

Please note that wine and spirits cannot be purchased in supermarkets in Norway, only beer and cider. Wine and spirits can only be purchased in government run stores called ‘Vinmonopolet’. The closest ones to Flåm are Voss, Sogndal, Årdal and Gol. It may be a good idea to make use of your tax-free quota.
